As promised in their advertisements, Fed Ex delivered my package by 10:30 on Saturday morning. In the package, ensconced in bubble wrap were twins – weighing in at 3 pounds and 3 pounds 8 ounces – hard cover and soft cover copies of At Home by Steve Poses: A Caterer’s Guide to Cooking & Entertaining.
I printed out this book many times on my little HP printer – made facing pages, three-hole punched them and glued them together so I could replicate the look and feel of the finished product. This process took about five hours each time. We used these binders – again and again – to think through, edit and revise as we wiggled our way toward the finish line. But through all of that I never could quite imagine what these 512 page babies would look and feel like professionally printed and bound. I am proud of the work done — not by some deep-pocketed publishing house with legions of food testers, art directors, graphic designers, food stylists and editors. I think the book looks sensational, but, in the end, that’s for you to decide.
We are now in the frantic throws of completing the companion website. In about a week, maybe a few days more we will begin shipping books and launch the companion website. For the next several days you will still be able to pre-order a signed and numbered limited first edition.
Note: I will be speaking all about At Home — book and companion website — at the Free Library on Thursday, October 15 beginning at 7:30 PM. Hope to see you there.
